In years gone by one of the biggest deciding factors when buying a console was based upon what ecosystem your friends were all playing. I remember when I was in secondary school I bounced between Playstation and Xbox as a result of who I wanted to play Gamebattles with in that year's Call Of Duty. Fast forward 10 or so years and now a lot of titles boast cross-play which allows for players to jump into games together across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PC and even mobile platforms. But that does beg the question, what are the best cross platform games?
For me it’s one of the most exciting progressions of modern day gaming, I myself am primarily a PC gamer and being able to hop on and join with my friends on console is a dream come true. Cross-play is clearly a great and much desired feature and we’re sure it’s one of the reasons Fortnite is such a gaming behemoth, it just makes sense.
However, this feature is not in all games; although it does not seem incredibly difficult to implement anymore there are some cases where platforms seem less keen to allow cross-play. This has primarily been Sony as they obviously would prefer for people to purchase a PS4/PS5 in order to play with their friends etc rather than simply jump into cross-play and stay on another console ecosystem. But now with some pressure rising it seems the winds are changing as we see huge franchises such as Call Of Duty moving away from the strict same platform only multiplayer in their most recent releases.
Another important note cross-play is not always just all platforms, some may be just Xbox and PC or just Nintendo Switch and Xbox for example.
In this list we’ll be picking the best cross platform games to date as there is a decent number now and there are new ones coming all the time. We will split the lists into paid and free games and note which platforms are available for cross play.
