If you're on a tight budget but need a new laptop that can handle your work and play modern games, then this MSI Cyborg 14 is a great option under £1000.
The Cyborg 14 packs in an GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU which is just right for the Full HD+ display with 144 Hz refresh rate. You also get an Intel Core i7 13620H processor that gives you plenty of power to get through all your work in the day and play your games in the evening. The Cooler Boost 5 cooling system helps keeps things cool when you're multitasking, and you also get the fast and reliable WiFi 6E and a 2.5 gig Ethernet port to make sure you don't lose connection when uploading your project or trying to clutch a round. SSD storage is on the smaller side at 512 GB, this is where the compromise is made to bring the price down, but if you store a lot of your work in the cloud and maybe get an external SSD you shouldn't have too many problems with storage.
I'm a big fan of the style of this one, with its sleek aluminium frame and translucent panels it definitely stands out but isn't over-the-top on the gaming aesthetic. That aluminium frame and 14-inch size means the Cyborg weighs 1.6Kg, which is fine to carry around in your backback throughout the day. MSI has the battery life of the Cyborg 14 going up to 5 hours, but your mileage will vary depending on what tasks you're doing on battery.
This is a good budget option that will be great for working on and can handle lots of games capably, but larger and more demanding games like Call of Duty, Baldur's Gate 3 will require tuning down due to the smaller amount of VRAM and they'll take up a larger portion of the 512GB SSD. Here are some quick specs:
Processor | Intel Core i7-13620H |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 - 6 GB GDDR6 @100W |
Storage | 512 GB SSD |
Memory | 16GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 1, USB 3.2 x 2, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5 mm jack |
Battery | 3-cell Lithium-polymer, Up to 5 hours |
When it comes to lower-priced gaming laptops, Acer's Nitro range has had that corner covered for a long time. 2024 is no different, with the Acer Nitro 14 still being one of the best-value gaming laptops you can get.
With a Ryzen 7 processor and GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU the Acer Nitro 14 laptop can run the latest titles on the 120Hz Full HD+ display without any issues. Like most other laptops you'll get 16 GB of DDR5 RAM to comfortably deal with multitasking, and you get WiFi 6E and a gigabyte ethernet port to make sure you're always online when you need to be.
There are some big differences between this and the Cyborg 14 that result in the jump in price. First is the GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU, which has a 100W power draw, which will be better for running larger games like Call of Duty. You get more USB ports on the Acer Nitro, obviously important if you need to connect it to lots of devices for work, but the main factor is the Nitro 14 has a much bigger battery life that can last up to 9 hours if you use it lightly. The Nitro 14 is bulkier than the Cyborg, and weighs just over 2kg so is a bit harder to carry around, but it's still a very solid gaming laptop to take around with you when you're not gaming.
Processor | AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 100W |
Storage | 512 GB SSD |
Memory | 16GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 1, USB 3.2 x 2, USB 4 x 1, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5 mm jack |
Battery | 4-cell Lithium-ion, Up to 9 hours |
The jump between the the £1499 MSI Stealth Studio 14 and the £1399 Acer Nitro is quite jarring when you count all of the upgrades for the £100 increase in price, and this £1499 right now is the sweet spot for gaming laptops that you can use for all of your student tasks as well.
Here we get the GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU with the 8GB of VRAM, this time running with a slightly larger 105W TDP, paired with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H Processor that is great for playing all of the latest games and doing any work you might have to do before you start playing with your mates. RAM is doubled now with 32 GB of DDR5, and so too is the storage as we now have a 1TB SSD which makes such a difference when you're keeping all of your work and games on the same device.
Another massive upgrade is with the screen, which is a gorgeous 2.8K OLED display running at 120Hz that will be great for any video or photo work you need to do, as well as making your games look fantastic. The MSI Stealth Studio also looks great on the outside, apart from the rather ironic 'stealth' logo on the vent at the back, the laptop looks very sleek and discreet and only weighs 1.7Kg. There are some extra bonuses too like a thunderbolt port and Intel WiFi 7, but all of these upgrades and smaller size do impact battery life a bit; you'll probably get up to 5 hours of light usage before needing to plug it in.
Processor | Intel Core Ultra 7 155H |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 105W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 32GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 1, USB 3.2 x 1, Thunderbolt 4 x 1, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5 mm jack |
Battery | 4-cell Lithium-polymer, Up to 5 hours |
When I was doing my master's degree I wanted a laptop that I could comfortable take with me to Uni and on journalism tasks, and then play games on when I was in my flat or staying with my parents during the break. I picked up an ASUS Zephyrus G14 and it was the best laptop I'd ever used and was perfect for what I needed. The G14 laptops are even better now and are still the best compact gaming laptops you can get.
Hardware specs for the G14 are the same for the others in this price range, with a GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU and a Ryzen 7 7735HS Processor. You get 16 GB of DDR5 RAM here, less than the MSI Stealth but still plenty for running lots of tasks at once. What sets the G14 apart from the others is the screen and overall build of the laptop. The G14 uses a 165Hz, Quad-HD IPS LED display which is excellent for gaming and good for all of your work tasks, and is one of my favourite non-OLED laptop screens available right now. The G14 looks great, with its all-white chasis, backlit chicclet keyboard and the AniMe Matrix on the top of the laptop that you can program to show off whatever image you want, or keep it blank to stay subtle.
The G14 has extra thin bezels and a nice hinge system that keeps it very compact in size. Despite the smaller size, you still get a battery life of up to 10 hours and the 100 W fast charging gets you to 50% in just 30 minutes when you're running low. The power brick isn't that big for the G14 either, so you don't add a lot of weight to the 1.72 kgs that this weighs.
Processor | AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 115W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 16GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 2, USB 3.2 x 2, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5 mm jack |
Battery | 4-cell Lithium-ion, Up to 10 hours |
One of the newer line of gaming laptops that has impressed this year is HP's OMEN Transcend line. These laptops get close to that supreme sleekness of the Razer Blade laptops, but with a much more palatable price tag.The specs are solid too in the first 16-inch laptop on our list, with an unlocked Intel i7 processor (with 20 cores!) and an NVIDIA RTX 4060 Graphics Card to handle all of your gaming needs. The larger 16:10 screen is worth the extra space in your backpack when it comes to gaming and and work, and the Transcend 16 uses a lovely 2.5K OLED screen with a 240Hz refresh rate.
Other specs for the Transcend 16 are good for the price, with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM, 1TB of storage, WiFi 7, Windows Hello facial recognition with the 1080p webcam, all good signs. The most impresssive feature of the Transcend 16 alongside the screen is how slim it is. Despite being a 16-inch laptop it's only 20cm thick, and weighs just over 2kg, so it's just as heavy as some of the 14-inch laptops we've listed. Despite being larger, the battery life on the Transcend 16 is lower due to the screen's demands, so you can get just over 5 hours with light usage.
£1699 is a good chunk of money, but in the context of gaming laptops the the Transcend 16 is one of the better-value packages because it has one of the best displays for gaming and working on. If you're after a laptop that will blend in with the crowd but doesn't hold back when you're playing new games, this is a great option.
Processor | Unlocked Intel Core i7-14700HX |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 115W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 16GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 2, USB 3.0 x 2, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5 mm jack |
Battery | 6-cell Lithium-ion polymer, Up to 5.5 hours |
HP has 14-inch versions of the Transcend laptops, that keep the same design aesthetic just with the smaller form-factor and screen. There is a 14-inch version of the Transcend we talked about above, but here we're going to focus on the first of the laptops with a GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. This laptop takes things to next level, with the GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU running at 200W TDP and paired with the new Intel Core Ultra 9 processor.
You get some serious gaming power here. You'll comfortably be playing all the latest games on Ultra settings on an even sharper 2.8K OLED screen, although this one runs at 120Hz. Your RAM is also doubled compared to the 4060 configurations, so you get 32GB of DDR5 to let you multitask to your heart's content. The rest of the laptop is the same as the 4060 Transcend 14 and 16, so if you're a fan of how they look but just want to have exceptional performance for your games this is one to consider.
Processor | Intel Core Ultra 9 185H |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 200W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 32GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 1, USB 3.1 x 2, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5 mm jack |
Battery | 6-cell Lithium-ion polymer, up to 5 hours |
The Razer Blades still set the benchmark for thin gaming laptops, they're Apple-like in the combination of slim design and high-power components. Razer laptops are still very expensive, and other manufacturers have got them beat when it comes to price-to-performance, but no one has managed to replicate Razer's style for gaming Laptops so far.
The 2024 version of the Blade 14 is, once again, excellent. It can slice and dice the latest titles with the combination of an AMD Ryzen 9 processor and an NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU running at 140W TDP. You get 16GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1TB SSD. This version of the Blade 14 uses a 240 Hz refresh rate Quad-HD+ IPS screen, not as nice as the OLED panels you can get for much more, but still a stellar display that's great for games and work. It only weighs 1.84Kg, but still gets a battery big enough to give you up to 10 hours of use on one charge.
The Blade 14 is for people who want a laptop that feels like a Macbook but can play games on max settings. The keyboard and speakers are excellent, like a Macbook, and the svelt design is very Apple-esque. One area is deviates is with the ports, as there are two USB-A ports as well as two USB-C ports that can be used for power and display functions if you want. The Blade 14 is expensive, but you won't get a better looking laptop with this kind of performance.
Processor | AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 140W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 16GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 2, USB 3.2 x 2, HDMI 2.1 x 1 |
Battery | Lithium-ion polymer, up to 10 hours |
Coming in just £50 more than the Blade 14 is the Predator Helios Neo from Acer, a laptop with very impressive hardware and a design that gets close to the Razer Blade for compactness. This laptop comes in a 14.5-inch form factor, slightly larger than normal but that doesn't impact the weight whuch is just 1.9kg. Inside the chasis you'll find the powerful GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU running at 110W, paired with the Intel Core Ultra 9-155H Processor. That's plenty of power which you'll need to run games and do your work on the WQXGA Quad HD 3K resolution LED screen which is amazing for gaming and work, and the 32GB of RAM will make sure you can multitask without any hiccups.
The Predator Helios Neo is thin and light, but it's not quite as sleek as the Razer Blade because of the way the hinges are set up which results in a strip running around the back of the laptop. What this does result in is some extra space for cooling, and the Helios Neo has a liquid metal vapour chamber and AeroBlade 3D fans to improve airflow without being too noisy. This is a laptop that has it all and manages to keep thin and relatively light while still keeping some of that gamer aesthetic.
Processor | Intel Core Ultra 9-155H |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 110W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 32GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 1, USB 3.2 x 2, Thunderbolt 4 x 1, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5mm jack x1 |
Battery | Lithium-ion polymer, up to 6 hours |
At the top of the line we've got the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16, which for some time now has been the best of the light gaming laptops, but also one of the most expensive. The new G16s look very similar to their smaller counterparts the G14, just with slightly larger dimensions due to the 16-inch screen. ASUS has also removed the AniMe Matrix, which was cool but definitely not for everyone, and as a result the laptop looks much more subtle.
The specs are great as expected, with an Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor and the GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU able to handle anything you throw at it. You get the expected 1TB of storage and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM to store and operate your games, applications and any browser tasks you need to do. There are no shortcomings with the screen this time, with the G16 sporting a 240Hz Quad HD+ OLED screen to run all your games with the best frames per second and give you the extra detail you need for any design work you might have. The G16's speakers are excellent too, so if you don't want to play games or listen to music with headphones on all day they're good to use.
All of this fits inside a laptop that still only weighs 1.85Kg, and you can get up to 10 hours of battery life from it.
Processor | Intel Core Ultra 9-185H |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 - 8 GB GDDR6 @ 115W |
Storage | 1 TB SSD |
Memory | 32GB DDR5 |
Connectivity | USB Type-C x 1, USB 3.2 x 2, Thunderbolt 4 x 1, HDMI 2.1 x 1, 3.5mm jack x1 |
Battery | 4-cell Lithium-ion, up to 10 hours |
If you don't have a budget, and want the absolute best NVIDIA gaming laptop out there, there's a version of the ASUS ROG Zephryus G16 that packs in an GeForce RTX 4090 laptop GPU - the top of the line card with 16GB of VRAM running at 115W. It does cost £3899, and is probably overkill for gaming on a 16-inch laptop screen, but if you want to have the best-of-the-best and make sure your laptop will be running games at maximum settings for as long as it lasts, this is available for you.
We've answered some of the most common questions regarding the best NVIDIA Gaming Laptops for students, if you have a question we've missed please leave a comment below
Gaming laptops are good for students because they pack in a lot of power while still remaining portable. If you're a design student and need to process images and videos for your work, the power of a dedicated NVIDIA Laptop GPU will be important for running those tasks. For other students, even just having the extra CPU cores and RAM is good when you have lots of tabs open on your web browser.
The extra upside is of course that you can use the same PC for work and gaming, without having to spend more on another PC or games console.
Gaming laptops have gotten a lot better over the years, and as a result there are lots of good laptops available at different prices. You can get a capable gaming laptop that makes a couple of compromises for just under £1000, or you can go for the best possible performance for over £3000. Right now, the sweet spot for NVIDIA gaming laptop prices is around £1400.
The most powerful NVIDIA Laptop Graphics Card you can get in a gaming laptop is the RTX 4090, which will easily run all the newest games at maximum settings for a couple of years at least.
That doesn't neccessarily make it "the best" choice, as 4090 laptops are very expensive. NVIDIA 4060 and 4070 laptop GPUs can run the latest games at high settings on QHD and OLED laptops comfortably, and can be a lot cheaper.
The other thing to look out for is the graphics card's thermal design power (TDP), which is the maximum amount of heat a GPU can generate under a sustained workload. A 4060 running at 200W TDP can perform faster than a 4070 running at 100W TDP, for example.
There are lots of options there across different price ranges with different features to choose from, here's the top three NVIDIA Gaming Laptops GamingDeals.com recommends:
I have a soft spot for the G14, I was lucky enough to use one of the first versions of it as a work and gaming laptop a few years ago and it's only improved since then. It's a very powerful laptop with a good screen, but my favourite part was how compact is was as well as how good it felt to carry around - and to look at. It's also one of the cheaper laptops with a GeForce RTX 4060 laptop GPU and 1TB of storage, which is always nice.
HP has really impressed me with the new Omen Transcend laptops. They look great, I like what they've done with the keyboard, and they run games really well - especially the GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU version with a high TDP. I think any of the 14-inch and 16-inch versions are good, so it's really down to your preference on screen size and GPU power.
My last pick is going to go to the cheapest laptop on the list, because students don't always have a lot of money to spare. Fortunately, this sub-£1000 laptop is still a good all-round machine. The GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU is capable, the lesser VRAM is a shame but at least it's running at 100W TDP so it will still run modern games well, and I really like the overall design aesthetic MSI has gone with here.
