Games these days have a reputation for arriving thick and fast – so much so that finding the time to squeeze in every major new Triple-A release has increasingly become tricky. With that said, this week alone (or tomorrow to be exact) sees two massive game launches in both Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Luckily, both are extremely different and will likely appeal to different people. Here we’ll run through which new game this week might be for you.
First things first, it’s good to make clear that while Wolfenstein: Youngblood is releasing for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and therefore will only be releasing there. Switch players, therefore, have a tough decision to make; as does anyone who owns multiple console platforms. So many games, so little time. Let’s get into it!
A sidequel spin-off to MachineGames’ popular Wolfenstein series reboot, Youngblood continues to the story of Nazi-slayer BJ Blazkowicz by letting you play as either of his two daughters. The story picks up some years after the events of 2017’s Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, following the journey of Jessica and Sophia who arrive in an alternate version of 1980s Paris in search of their missing father. The Wolfenstein series takes place in a timeline where the Nazis won World War II, with it being up to you to take back the Western world.
This is an action-packed, balls-to-the-wall shooter that sees you gun down legions of Nazi enemies, taking hold of all kinds of futuristic weaponry such as laser cannons, robot drones and the like. Where Wolfenstein: Youngblood differs from previous series entries, however, is in its emphasis on co-op thanks to the appearance of two main protagonists. No longer do you have to go it alone when dismantling the Third Reich’s regime. In either online or local co-op, Youngblood lets you and friend approach scenarios differently throughout multiple levels.
What’s more, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is so co-op driven, that the developers have included what’s called a ‘Buddy Pass’ in every copy, which means that only one person needs to purchase the game in order for two people to play. We saw something extremely similar with the release of the co-op only prison break game A Way Out, so this should give you a good idea of what to expect.

The Fire Emblem series is one that dates all the way back to the early days of the NES, but it’s one that’s been successfully kept alive through critically acclaimed entries brought to portable platforms. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the first home console release (though it can also be played in Switch’s handheld mode, too) since 2007’s Radiant Dawn on the Wii. Three Houses, however, ups the ante by merging the familiar turn-based tactical gameplay with role-playing and social simulation, which helps to give battles all the more thrilling.
Set within the fantastical continent of Fodlan, you take on the role of a tutor attempting to unite the three divided houses, eventually forced to choose a nation to support. From here you’ll guide your nation through a glut of turn-based battles, recruiting characters, planning out tactics and keeping morale high in order to win.
Needless to say, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a strategy game that would suit players that appreciate a more laid-back approach and have a thirst for world-building. Fantasy fans will also have plenty of reason to immerse themselves in this HD version of Fire Emblem. The game looks good great on Nintendo Switch either when played at home or handheld on the go.

So there you have it! Two games that, while extremely different, both offer something unique to fans of high-octane action or thoughtful turn-based strategy. As already mentioned, the latter is only available for Nintendo Switch, while Youngblood will hit all three major console platforms.
