I think we can all agree that the Dualshock 4 is a pretty great controller. What was initially thought to be a bit ludicrous in the central touch pad actually makes accessing in-game maps a breeze, and the its overall look and feel makes playing for long periods of time extremely comfortable. However, while other platforms have always given players a souped-up pro controller option later on in a console’s lifecycle, PS4 has comfortably sat out this fight. That is, until now…
PlayStation has officially announced a new accessory for the Dualshock 4 controller known simply as the Back Button Attachment. Releasing on February 14th, this smart little gizmo will snugly latch on to the bottom of the gamepad to add two programmable back buttons. These can then be mapped to up to 16 different actions, whether you prefer easier access to the Dualshock’s R and L shoulder buttons or other inputs like triangle and square.
It’s a simple design, and though does seem a little strange for an accessory like this to be introduced so close to when PS5 releases, the Back Button is priced at only £29.99. That’s pretty good value when you consider that the Xbox One’s Elite Series 2 typically retails for £149.99; The Dualshock 4 Back Button and controller combo would sit more around the £79.99 – almost half!
Another aspect you can’t overlook with the Dualshock 4 Back Button is how it will factor into PlayStation 5’s controller. Does this confirm that the attachment will be compatible? I think it’d be fair to assume so, given that the new console’s design will have already been locked in for its Holiday 2020 release. If the PS5 controller doesn’t come with back buttons by default, expect this new accessory to work wonders.
