The curtain call – Pokémon Red/Blue Challenge, Day 5

The curtain call – Pokémon Red/Blue Challenge, Day 5

Editors Note: This is the final diary in a 5 day Pokémon face-off between Console Deal team members Nat & Gaz. Check out how the guys did yesterday.

A Tale of Two Gamers, Pokemon Red/Blue Challenge - Final Day

Nat: The Final Day

I woke up still in Bill's cottage on the final day of my challenge with the Pokemon version of Bill pacing frantically back and forth.

Still pleading for my help, I grabbed my coat and headed for the door; I'd like to say I didn't have time to help him but truth be told his whining was doing my head in, and I figured the human version of him would be even worse.

I still had three Pokeballs left to use so I headed out into the grass to find some high-level Pokemon that I hadn't come across yet.

Rattata Maybe I could unleash a plague on Gaz's team...

Within seconds I stumbled across a Rattata and quickly formulating a new plan in my head I decided to catch him. Two spaces left in the team, my plan was simple, I will just catch the next two I see and drill them in the art of war before my time was up.

Walking through even more grass, I quickly nab myself two Spearows, they look more ferocious than Pidgey, and if I juice them up with enough 'potions' before the fight, they may just stand a chance.

Using the little time left at my disposal, I put my team through their final paces before boosting their morale with a rousing pep talk; that failure against Team Gaz would be unacceptable, and anybody who doesn't win their fight would be sent to the Pokemon Go candy factory.

My final team. My final team.

Gaz: The Final Day

Over and out

Day 5, out of 5. This is it. I have a mere 30 minutes left in order to maximise my chances in the upcoming battle against Nat. I expect I’d make the most ground out in the wild, chewing through Pokémon and grinding XP. Hell, I might even spot a rare new Pokémon like a Caterpie or a Weedle - I hear they’re great.

Naturally I go against my better instinct and head straight back into Vermilion City, towards the gym. The previously invulnerable bush offers little struggle against the mighty CUT, and before I know it, I’m marching through the doors and into the vast hallway beyond.

I’m presented with a room full of trash cans. I kid you not. It’s a clean freak’s dream. I check them in turn, discovering that I have to flick on 2 switches consecutively to gain access to the boss. I’m not going to lie... it’s a horrific puzzle, one that I hope Nintendo feel ashamed and embarrassed about creating years later, and it takes me nearly 15 minutes to solve thanks to the constantly resetting and randomised switches.

Possibly my most meaningful accomplishment after fetching Prof. Oak his groceries. Possibly my most meaningful accomplishment after fetching Prof. Oak his groceries.

I break into the final room - perhaps symbolic as the last room I’ll ever see in my Kanto adventure. The boss stands alone on the back wall. As I approach, he starts monologuing. It’s a frivolous affair, as I don’t think he realises I’m hammering the continue button and readying myself for the final test.

It’s over in mere moments. His mighty challenge of Pikachu after Pikachu is no match for my Ivysaur. I even throw out my pet Oddish for kicks, bless it.

And with that, I’m done.

4 days played.
2 hours of struggle.
3 gyms beaten.
6-8 hours of illegal grinding.
0 Poké Balls thrown.
6 Pokémon at my disposal.

Ivysaur, Geodude, Oddish, Paras, Spearow & Zubat... I choose you.

The battle will be taking place on the launch day of Pokemon Sun and Moon, on 23rd November. Check back then!
