Wind back the clock to the days of 16-bit gaming with the Sega Mega Drive Mini

The latest nostalgia-driven retro console poised to tap into players’ fondness of previous game generations, the Sega Mega Drive Mini successfully replicates the look and feel of Sega’s classic 16-bit console – slimming it down into one neat little box that lets you just plug in and play. The original Sega Mega Drive released in 1990 to directly compete with Nintendo’s SNES, with the Mini being the best manner in which to relive 40 classic titles from its catalogue.

Up until this point, the only legal ways of playing such iconic games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage was either to wait for an authorised re-release or buy an original Sega Mega Drive and game cartridge. Tracking down everything packaged into the Sega Mega Drive Mini on the second-hand market will soon turn out to be a costly endeavour – here you can get it all for £69.99.

The iconic console returns in slick, miniaturized form

The Sega Mega Drive Mini visually replicates the design of the original Sega console, albeit at a size that is much more suited to being neatly slotted into any entertainment centre. This includes the classic on/off button, volume slider and cartridge slot on top of the box, which while only for show, does a great job at transporting you back to the golden 16-bit era of ‘90s gaming. The Mega Drive’s original three-button control pad has also been authentically recreated.

Two control pads for couch co-op fun

Whereas Nintendo’s recent retro consoles required you to purchase a second controller separately, the Sega Megadrive Mini comes with two full-sized three-button controllers right out of the box. Both plug neatly into the mini console itself, remaining fully compatible with all included two-player games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2 and Toejam & Earl. Both wired control pads feature a long enough lead that games can be enjoyed from the comfort of your couch.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Sega’s iconic blue blur returns again in his original game, running through such gamiliar locales as Green Hill Zone in a bid to stop Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 improved on the original in almost every way, adding new features like the spin dash, two-player co-op and new character Tails.

Altered Beast

Set in Ancient Greece, Altered Beast is a two-player side-scrolling beat ‘em up where every level lets you transform into a different monster. Rise from your grave!

Streets of Rage 2

Streets of Rage 2 is perhaps the most classic side-scrolling brawlers, letting you perform beatdowns on deadbeats while traversing through futuristic city streets.

Space Harrier 2

Space Harrier 2, along with Altered Beast, was one of the first Megadrive games to use digitised human recordings. In it, you fly through stages blasting enemies at high speed.

Shinobi III

A side-scrolling combat epic that sees players step into the shoes of a ninja master, Shinobi III sees you slice and dies enemies using ninja stars and your sword.

Shining Force

Turn-based tactics reached unprecedented heights with the release of Shining Force on the Megadrive, combining hard sci-fi with high fantasy.

Gunstar Heroes

One of the classic Run and Gun games from the 16-bit era, Gunstar Heroes was a Megadrive showcase title full of advanced graphics and frantic action.

Ecco The Dolphin

Ecco The Dolphin released in 1992 to offer an answer to that fabled question: What would happen if a bottlenose dolphin could travel through time?

Comix Zone

Comix Zone is a highly stylised 2D brawler that sees you leap from panel to panel within the world of a comic book, taking down dudes as protagonist Sketch.
