The first set released to coincide with the launch of Nintendo’s unexpected cardboard-based venture, the Nintendo Switch LABO: Toy-Con 01 Variety Kit is an all-in-one package that represents the wide swathe of activities people can create and take part in. There are several builds included in the variety kit, ranging from a fully playable piano to an intricately designed fishing rod. All of which act as the perfect excuse for kids and kids-at-heart to merge their Nintendo Switch with Cardboard in a variety of inventive ways.
Each of the cardboard LABO builds listed above come complete with their own respective mini-game designed to best showcase what each is capable of. The Toy-Con Motorbike boasts a particular appeal, being fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch’s hallmark racing game: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Make every turn and drift with the appropriate motions as any of your favourite Mushroom Kingdom characters.
You get two Toy-Con RC Cars right out of the box, powered not by batteries or chagrining but just the pure power of your joy-con’s vibration. Fit both either side of the LABO build and then use the screen to change the direction and movement speed to your preferred level.
Always wanted to go fishing but lack the water? The Variety Kit’s Toy-Con fishing rod is the perfect solution, requiring you to build the rod itself as well as an ingenious pulley system complete with string. Following that rest your screen down and off you go!
The Variety Kit’s Toy-Con house build lets everyone unleash their inner interior designer, providing the means for players to shakeup how they’d like their dream house to look at just the push of a button. Simply build the house, insert the screen, and get designing.
The Toy-Con motorbike comes with its own mini-game (as with every build featured here) to let you rev up your engine accordingly. After warming up, however, why not pair this up with its Mario Kart 8: Deluxe functionality and go head to head with Mario and friends?
The Toy-Con Piano represents the most complex design featured in the Variety Kit, requiring you to build each individual key before getting the internal magnets to sync up. Once done, you’ll be able to play real-life tunes by anyone from Mozart to Taylor Swift.
