A staggering 18 years following the release of its last sequel Sega’s classic Shenmue series is set to return with Shenmue 3 launching on PS4 in November 2019. It continues the story of martial artist Ryo Hazuki, who is hot on the heels of finally tracking down his father’s killer. Shenmue 3 promises to be a faithful mix of brawler and life simulation in the classic style, updating the mechanics and characters for a modern audience.

It’s no secret that getting this game made has not been easy, with Shenmue 3’s production being partially crowdfunded via Kickstarter. The series is a cult classic that had accumulated a small following over the years, so for them 2019 hasn’t come soon enough. Ryo will at last be able to conclude his epic story, bringing dedicated fans along for the ride.

Authentic martial arts action mixed with real-life interactions

The Shenmue series is one that’s known for its odd mixture of action-orientated quick time events and role-playing life simulation, where Ryo can be beating down bad guys one minute then trying to negotiate with a shopkeeper the next. Shenmue 3 successfully maintains this flexible structure, deepening this intelligent story that’s been almost 20 years in the making.

Cinematic visuals expressed as intuitive quick time events

Fight sequences in Shenmue 3 differ from your traditional action-adventure games in that a lot of the time the player isn’t in direct control. Rather, at certain moments, button prompts will appear on the screen, which will see Ryo demonstrate amazing fighting skills when correctly pressed in time. This works to help players who aren’t accustomed to countering, parrying and attacking feel like they’re part of the action in a meaningful way.

Explore a vibrant, colourful world

Shenmue 3 takes place in an incredibly detailed rendition of Guilin, Japan, filled with plenty of interesting characters to meet and sights to see. Both will be useful in helping Ryo hunt down the man he is looking for – even when taking the story at a pace that suits the player. Shenmue promises to be a wildly cinematic adventure that just so happens to be set in an equally interesting world.
