Despite releasing several tie-ins during the height of the film franchise’s popularity, in the world of video games, the Harry Potter franchise has remained quite stagnant lately. This finally changes later in 2021, however, thanks to the release of Hogwarts Legacy, a new prequel story set 200 years before the arrival of the boy who lived. It sets players in the shoes of a new Hogwarts student attending the eponymous school about to embark on their own adventure.

Developed by the same team behind Disney Infinity, Hogwarts Legacy is a fully single-player adventure. Players will be able to learn and cast various spells featured from the movies (as well as new ones), taming magical beasts and battling dark wizards as necessary to gain a leg up on all the evil forces threatening the school’s safety. Your legacy is whatever you choose to make it.

A sprawling single-player RPG set in the Harry Potter universe

Hogwarts Legacy marks the first big-budget Harry Potter game to release on consoles in over a decade. Such an occasion has been a long time coming, with Hogwarts Legacy promising to be a deep and involving solo journey played from a third-person view. A morality system, similar to what’s seen in Mass Effect in Dragon Age, has also been confirmed to increase the sense of player agency. All your choices and decisions will have consequences in Hogwarts Legacy.

Freely explore several iconic locations

Not all your time will be spent in the titular school of witchcraft and wizardry. Other areas confirmed to appear in Hogwarts Legacy included the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village. This is just the tip of the iceberg of where you’ll be able to venture while studying to be a professional wizard. Expect to see side quests in almost every location, all of which will bolster the main through line.

Experience Hogwarts in the 1800s

The version of Hogwarts featured here differs wildly from the one depicted in the movies, books or even prior games. This adventure is set 200 years before the events most fans will be familiar with, and the 19th century poses its own set of challenges that have previously not been depicted up until now. As a new student it’ll be your job to perceive and master the art of ancient magic.
