Borderlands 3 is the latest games in Gearbox Software’s cel-shaded first-person shooter franchise which merges satisfying gunplay with endless fountains of loot. This third entry is the first one developed natively for PS4 and Xbox One, following on from the success of 2015’s Handsome Collection which bundled in Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel together. There are new worlds to explore and millions of gun combinations to take hold of, all wrapped up in that notably irreverent Borderlands charm.

Outside of a fresh line-up of vault hunters, Borderlands 3 slightly tweaks the loot ‘n’ shoot formula that makes it easier than ever for you to jump in with friends. Level scaling, for example, now ensures that players at wildly different ends of the spectrum can play together and still have a good time, with bosses and enemies being scaled accordingly to whomever shoots at them. Sliding and ledge climbing movement abilities have also been introduced, with Borderlands 3 being much more fun to traverse.

Take hold over one million guns in the original looter-shooter for Xbox One and PS4

One of the defining mechanics of the Borderlands franchise is the sheer number of guns the game’s algorithm presents before you. It essentially means that nobody’s experience playing through the game will be exactly the same, with each gun’s stats being randomised.  Previous series entries had thousands, but now Borderlands 3 allows for millions of combinations.

Play as four new vault hunter classes

Like the previous three entries before it, Borderlands 3 offers up four distinct playable vault hunters that each look and operate differently from one another. This time they come in the form of Moze the Gunner, Amara the Siren, FL4K the Beastmaster and Zane the Operative. Each have their own independent skill tree that, when upgraded, helps make them a unique asset to your four-person team while journeying through the galaxy in search of the precious vault.

Fresh planets to explore outside of Pandora

Up until now, Pandora has been the only planet players were able to roam. Now, however, Borderlands 3 is going bigger and better by letting you visit multiple  – all boasting lashings of loot for you to track down and plunder within a distinct location that looks noticeably different from the last. They’re all reachable via the Sanctuary III, which acts as your new main hub base flying through space.

Who are Borderlands 3’s four new vault hunters?

As briefly alluded to, Borderlands 3 offers players the chance to take of four all-new vault hunter classes. Each pack their own punch by way of wildly diverse abilities, which when used together as part of a co-operative squad will spell disaster for any psycho standing in their way. Here we explore each new character more in-depth. Which class will you pick when Borderlands 3 releases on 13th September?

Zane The Operative

A great all-rounder if ever there was one, Zane works as Borderlands 3’s Operative class, which ostensibly means that he specialises in battlefield gadgetry. Creating chaos comes easy but it’s never a chore to sneak back away as if he were never there. Zane’s three action skills boil down to: Barrier (deployable to defend against projectiles), SNTNL (an automated drone that flies to attack enemies) and Digi-Clone (a digital decoy of Zane that is useful for distraction.

Fl4K The Beastmaster

As his name might suggest, Fl4k is a robotic beastmaster who simply lives for the hunt. As such, all his abilities and skills are geared towards preying on unsuspected bandits, built around the use of his three wildly distinct pets. The Skag, Spiderant and flying stalker all operate autonomously in battle scenarios as Fl4k himself can hold back to pop off shots from afar. Skag unleashes a Gamma Burst, the spiderant performs a Rakk Attack and Stalker can facilitate a quick getaway.

Moze the Gunner

Previously referred to simply as ‘the Bot Jock’ before her official trailer reveal, Moze the Gunner is a natural evolution from the soldier classes that have appeared in previous Borderlands games. Her central gimmick is that she’s accompanied by an enormous mech called The Iron Bear, which can be equipped with a choice of three giant weapons with which to unleash devastation. You can choose from the minigun, laser gun or grenade launcher, assigning two of them at any one time.

Amara the Siren

Sirens have always been the most mystical classes present in the Borderlands universe, and Amara is actually the third we’ve gotten to play as. A lot of Amara’s action skills focus on letting her deal great damage when up close to enemies, being a great juxtaposition to the typical far-off gunplay the series is known for. Phaseslam will see her launch into the air and slam down, Phasecast lets her phase forwards to deal damage, and Phasegrasp lets her summon giant fists for a short time.
